Starting to See the Link? Childhood trauma & the nervous system.

Books & Podcasts That Help You Understand How Childhood Trauma Shapes Your Nervous System & Why That Matters for Healing

When I first began learning about how trauma affects the body, something inside me softened. Suddenly, years of self destruction and exhaustion started to make sense in a way they never had before. Now, as a therapist, I see that same lightbulb moment in so many of the women I work with — that moment of recognising that what they feel isn't "all in their head." These books and podcasts are gentle companions for that stage of discovery.

This book was my gateway to compassion—both for myself and the women I work with. When I first read it, something shifted. Suddenly, all those ways I'd been feeling and acting for years made sense; they weren't character flaws, they were my nervous system doing exactly what it needed to do to survive. Levine explains how trauma gets stuck in the body and how your system can naturally complete what was interrupted during a traumatic moment. If you're beginning to recognize that your body might be holding onto something, this book will help you understand why—and maybe, like it did for me, it'll be the beginning of treating yourself with real compassion.

This is a weekly podcast hosted by a Somatic Experiencing practitioner and trauma survivor. Britt's episodes are honest, grounded, and filled with practical nervous system tools you can actually use. If you're looking for something you can listen to while walking, cooking, or just sitting—something that meets you where you are without pressure—this podcast offers both the understanding and the "what now?" that makes healing feel less lonely.

This is the book that changed everything for me and so many of my clients. Van der Kolk brings together neuroscience, research, and real stories to show exactly how trauma lives in the body—why you might freeze, why certain smells take you back, why talking about it sometimes isn't enough. If you're at that stage where you're starting to understand the link between what happened and how your body responds now, this book will validate everything you've been feeling and explain the science behind it.

This is a specific episode that breaks down polyvagal theory in an accessible way. Deb Dana is a leading voice in translating this theory for everyday people, and in this conversation she explores how understanding your nervous system's architecture helps you befriend it rather than fight it. If polyvagal theory intrigues you but feels abstract, this episode makes it click—and it gives you language for what's actually happening in your body.

Last but not least, a beautiful journal for you to record and reflect on glimmers; small moments of joy, safety and connection.. A reminder that there is light amongst the dark.

Whether it's a book, a podcast, a journal, or a quote, the right message at the right time can make a real difference.
